Starting Your Own Business

If you have the desire to help others improve their health, there are many ways for you to help others and make some money  at the same time.

More than likely, you have seen Internet ads or been bombarded by unsolicited emails from people promising to make you rich one way or the other.

We can't promise to make you rich, but, we can show you how to help people with their health problems. And, if you're successful with helping people, then, you can make some money.

The key is to focus on what you like to do and what you do well. Do you like  to talk? Then, focus on how and where to give talks about health and nutrition. Do you like to write? Then, focus on how and where to write about health and nutrition.

If you don't have the money to invest in a website, blog or book, that's okay. There are many free technologies and platforms that you can use to get started -- as long as you have a computer and an Internet connection. For example, platforms such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, and Blogger provide free tools that allow you to set up your own website or blog for free. Of course, if you're really serious about this, and you have the finances ($7 to $10 a month), then, sign up with a reputable web host provider.

There are many different areas that you can go into to help other people: writing (i.e. a book), writing on the Internet (i.e. blogging), speaking (i.e. doing lectures), counseling (helping people 1-on-1), etc.  But, before you select one of these areas, take the time to examine your true motives, your skill set, and the things that you like to do. Don't start out writing if you don't like to write! Don't start out trying to set up your own website if you don't have some basic computer/Internet skills!

Instead focus on who you are: What is your life story? What challenges have you had to overcome? What are your primary skills? What do you enjoy doing? If you didn't have to worry about paying bills, what would you be doing with your life? Have you done something like improve your own health? Did you  reverse your diabetes and get off the medications? Did you lose 50 pounds of weight? Did you defeat some other disease?

To summarize: Before you invest your time and money in starting your own health business, take the time to examine your true motives, your skill set, and the things that you like to do.  That will help you to figure out what area of the health business to get into. 

In addition, make sure that you look at the things that you can do for free to get a feel for what you'll be getting involved with before you spend a lot of money.

Importance of Technology

Two of the most powerful technologies from the 1980s and 1990s have grown and converged enabling many of us to live better lives, health-wise and financial-wise.

These two technolgies will help you tremendously to be an even more successful health coach. And, if you're not a health coach, these two technologies can help you to become a health coach (or an author, or whatever field you're interested in).

Do you know what those two technologies are? 

Hint: If you're reading this blog post, then, you are using both of those technologies -- namely, the personal computer and the Internet.

The convergence of the personal computer and the Internet has fueled a major shift in the way we live, work and communicate. This convergence allows us to learn about things that used to require us to go back to college or it required us to spend a lot of time in the library doing research.

Now, you can accomplish a lot of this and other activities in the comfort of your own home. Unfortunately, most of us either misuse or under-utilize our personal computer and its connection to the rest of the world via the Internet. Most of us use our computer for things like paying our bills, shopping online, playing video games, and socializing via platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

But, the real power of the personal computer and the Internet can help you address two of the top problems that most of us will face during our lifetime.  One of those problems is financial -- unless you're related to Bill Gates or Warren Buffett. The other problem is our health -- sooner or later either we get sick or a loved one in our family gets sick.

Fortunately, there are thousands of ways that your computer and the Internet can help you with your finances and/or your health -- as long as you're willing to put in the time and effort -- to first figure out how to help yourself, and, then, use that experience to help others. But, if you're going to just sit around and complain or regret what has happened to you, then, your computer can't help you.

On the other hand, if you're motivated to either improve your health or improve  your finances, then, your computer can be a true Godsend. It can even help you to start your own business. Just start using some of the free Internet tools and social media platforms to get you started, i.e. Google, Gmail, Blogger, YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Picasa, SlideShare, MySpace. Some of these platforms will actually pay you! Technology is great if you know how to use it ...

If you're interested in helping others (via health coaching), but you're not sure how to get started, think about what you do well and what you really like doing. If you didn't have to worry about paying bills, what would you be doing with your life? What would get your juices flowing such that you would jump out of bed every morning with enthusiasm and joy?

Then, think about the major challenges and problems that you had have to overcome and deal with during your life. Some examples may include things like raising a family, putting your kids through college, getting a college degree, improving your health, losing a lot of weight, serving in the military, overcoming abusive parents, helping others ... the list goes on and on.

Then, think about what you're really good at -- writing? talking? planning? mathematics? raising your children? working? helping others? convincing others of your point of view? making friends? fixing things? ...

Then, think about how to converge what you like doing with what you do well and with the challenges and problems you've had to overcome during your life.

Then, do your own research in an area that garners a lot of interest from you. Don't focus so much on how to make money -- instead focus on how to help others -- learn how to be a true servant first. Select a field of that allows you to help others and be a servant. For example, health coaching is a field that allows you to help others and be a servant of the people.

Personal Observation from the Author: I have met many healthcare professionals and business entrepreneurs in the health & wellness industry over the years. Roles of a Health Coach

A good health coach plays many roles and has many responsibilities in helping their clients achieve their health goals. The 6 major roles and responsibilities of a good health coach include the following:

1. Providing self-management support to empower the client
2. Educating the client in the areas of nutrition and lifestyle changes 
3. Bridging the gap between the doctor and the patient
4. Helping patients navigate the health care system
5. Offering emotional support
6. Serving as a continuity figure 

Providing self-management support. Self-management support is essential for patients to become empowered and extend their health care outside the clinic walls and into their real lives. Coaches train patients in seven domains of self-management support: providing information, teaching disease-specific skills, promoting healthy behaviors, imparting problem-solving skills, assisting with the emotional impact of chronic illness, providing regular follow-up and encouraging people to be active participants in their care.

Providing education. Providing education so that clients obtain the proper knowledge is key to empowering the client to live a better quality of life. A good health coach is instrumental in providing this knowledge to the client, especially in the areas of proper nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle changes, i.e. detox, juicing, nutritional supplementation. This is critical for diabetic clients who must make the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes to better control their blood glucose levels and manage their diabetes. In fact, studies show that clients have better health outcomes when provided with disease-specific knowledge and skills in areas such as diabetes self-management. A meta-analysis of 53 randomized controlled trials concluded that self-management support improves blood pressure, blood glucose control and BMI.

Bridging the gap between clinician and patient. Throughout the care process, there are plenty of opportunities for disconnects between the clinician and the patient. Prescribing medications is one example. It is a two-part endeavor: 1) writing prescriptions and 2) making sure patients obtain, understand and actually take the medications as prescribed. Physicians perform part one but lack time to address the critical second part. Health coaches can bridge these gaps by following up with patients, asking about needs and obstacles, and addressing health literacy, cultural issues and social-class barriers.

Helping patients navigate the health care system. Many patients, particularly the elderly, disabled and marginalized, need a navigator to help locate, negotiate and engage in services. Coaches can help coordinate care and speak up for patients when their voices are not heard.

Offering emotional support. Coping with illness is emotionally challenging. Well-intentioned but rushed clinicians may fail to address patients' emotional needs. As trust and familiarity grow, coaches can offer emotional support and help patients cope with their illnesses.

Serving as a continuity figure. Coaches connect with patients not only at office visits but also between visits, creating familiarity and continuity. This is particularly helpful in practices where clinicians work part-time or see one another's patients.

Training Schools

There are many schools and institutes that provide on-campus and online training courses for health coaching and certification. Most of these schools offer certification training in the $3,000 to $9,000 range, depending on the scope of the program that you enroll in. There are other programs in the $900 to $2,000 range.

If you are interested in starting your own health coaching or consultant business, you may want to consider taking an online course. They are often affordable, self-paced, professional and can give you very specific information for your area of need or help you clarify your life direction and career path.

They are taking major steps to add credibility and validity to the health coaching profession by way of research and upcoming policy change. Duke boasts an incredibly inspiring health center on their campus in Duke Integrative Medicine, that serves the patient or client in numerous alternative health therapies in addition to traditional physician-focused care.

Since 2008, Duke has been leading the Duke Integrative Health Professional Coaching Training for people who are interested in changing careers, or adding onto their current training.  Wellness coaching, from their standpoint, is much more than goal setting for nutrition or weight loss.  They emphasize the client-centered approach in a way that promotes the client’s own self-discovery. Through dialogue, discussion of values, motivation and personal experiences, the client begins to choose their own goals.  Readiness and confidence levels are assessed, both through introspective self-assessment check-lists, and through informal, but highly trained, guided client-focused conversation.

Their program involves some on-campus instruction, in the form of modules. A week of full day classes are held approximately once a month for 3-4 months during their Foundations course.  There are also online assignments between classroom sessions.  A second series of classes are given during their Certification training, and students are required to conduct practice and real-life coaching sessions as part of their qualification process.  Taken back to back, the entire coursework lasts about a year.

Duke University is a highly respected university and this formal learning program that can lead to Certification in a year is highly competitive program. For those who are already in the medical and health field this is a very good program, attending this program will show that you have a true dedication to learning and will reflect favorably upon you.

A Dr. Sears Health Coach Certification gives you the ability and tools to work with individuals or groups in settings such as corporate wellness, schools, medical centers, community groups. 

The Dr. Sears Wellness Institute was established to in 2001 by Dr. Bill Sears and exercise physiologist Sean Foy. In 2010, they introduced online Certified L.E.A.N. Coach Training and Certification courses to accommodate international coaches and those who were unable to travel to an in-person training. 

For people who are coming into this field without any medical background, this is a very good program to take. It has a comprehensive and easy to understand curriculum that is online and has excellent student support. For those who want to own their own business, once you are certified through one of their programs the Institute will help you with your marketing. For those starting out in the field, this program is highly recommended, especially because of the amount of support that students receive during and after certification.

The NSHC offers a Health Coach Certification, which is the NSHC’s Certified Health Coach, CHC. This certification is only open to licensed and credentialed healthcare professionals, i.e. physician, physician assistant, doctor of chiropractic/podiatry, nurse practitioner, RN/LPN/LVN, therapists, dentist, licensed dental hygienist, registered dietician, certified nutrition specialist, psychologist, certified diabetic educator (CDE), pharmacist, certified athletic trainer, certified exercise physiologist, and  licensed acupuncturist. This self-study program includes online skills practice, skills competency and testing. 

The NSCH was founded in 2007 on the premise that healthcare professionals could positively affect patient/client compliance to both improve outcomes and reduce costs by combining evidence-based practice interventions with the science of motivational interviewing. NSHC's health coaching education and certification program will continue to evolve in tandem with research, clinical best practice and health care reform.  

The NSHC program is a highly respected program and they have a unique evidence-based health coaching approach. A certification from this program will certainly give any healthcare provider a nod of approval from their peers and it will make them more likely to be hired. For those that do not already hold a licensed or credentialed healthcare profession, completing the program for the certificate of completion will show that they are willing to go the extra mile to learn and that they have received a completion certificate from one of the top programs in the nation.

American Council on Exercise (ACE)

Developed primarily for those who have experience working in the fitness and exercise field, the ACE Health Coach certification is purposed to expand or bring to the next level the career of fitness professionals looking to integrate a whole-body/mind approach to helping their clients.

For this certification, you have the option of purchasing just the exam voucher or the exam and one of two self-study packages. The “Standard” package includes ACE Academy which consists of weekly email courses reminding you to keep your studies on track. The “Premium” package includes ACE Academy Select, which implements a presentation-based curriculum. This package also has an extra practice test and free re-test voucher.

In order to sit for the ACE Health Coach certification exam you must have a current CPR/AED certificate along with either a current NCCA-accredited certification, or an associate’s degree or higher. Comparable work experience in fitness, nutrition or related fields is also considered and may take the place of the degree or certification requirements.

ACE is the only organization whose health coach certification is accredited by the National Council on Certifying Agencies (NCCA). This distinction means the certification has been officially recognized as a credential whose holders are competent professionals in the field of health coaching. As a result, it may be more highly regarded by others and may create more employment opportunities in certain settings.

As previously mentioned, most of these schools offer certification training in the $3,000 to $9,000 range, depending on the scope of the program. There are other programs in the $900 to $2,000 range.

The key to understanding the tuition of a program is making sure you know exactly what is included within the cost -- so that you're comparing apples to apples. Some programs appear less expensive, however, when you study them further, you find hidden charges, such as needing to hire your own mentor coach, purchase additional books, and/or pay for business development coaching or kits.

Health coaching is a collective and highly individualized service that concentrates on enhancing wellness and health. It develops a person’s ability to attain short-term and long-term health objectives. Whether its achieving overall well-being or addressing a particular health-related problem, the main emphasis is always on improving your patient's or client's quality of life.

The Ways for a Health Coach to Make Money

There are primarily two types of income that a business generates: active income and passive income.

Active income is the income you earn for services that you have performed. This income includes wages, tips, salaries, commissions and income from businesses in which there is material participation such as conducting a coaching session or running a class.

Passive income is the income you produce from business activities in which you do not materially participate such as the royalty fee you receive when a customer buys your book from Amazon.com.

One of the biggest mistakes that health coaches (and other healthcare professionals) make is that they tend to focus on producing active income and not passive income. By focusing on ways to generate both active income and passive income, you increase the opportunities for your business to generate a lot more money and reward you with more freedom and a better quality of life for you and your family.

Active income is what you get when someone hires you to do a job. You do the work; you get paid. Usually the amount of effort or time you put in directly relates to how much you get paid as active income. There is obviously a ceiling on how much you can make here because there are only a certain amount of hours in the day/week/month.

With active income, you get paid only once. In other words, the income is non-recurring. This may include public speaking, hosting conferences, one-on-one coaching, and consulting. You do the work in exchange for a fee. You are essentially trading your time for a one-time payment.

Passive income is just the opposite. It is what happens when customers pay you over and over again for the same work — work you only did once. In other words, it is recurring. Examples of this includes book royalties, affiliate commissions, course sales, website ads, and monthly membership fees. You are trading your time for an ongoing revenue stream.

Active Income Options
In general, most of a health coach's income is based solely on meeting with their clients and getting paid for their time with them. But, there are many other ways to generate active income, especially if you're running your own business. 

Here are some of the ways to generate active income for your health coaching business.

Conduct one-on-one health coaching sessions. This is the primary activity that most health coaches perform. However, you can expand this by conducting coaching sessions over the phone and over the Internet (i.e. Skype). This allows you to reach more people within the comfort of your own office or home!

Conduct group health coaching sessions. This is very beneficial to a family or a group of clients who can't afford to pay for individual sessions.

Conduct workshops, lectures, classes. This allows you to reach more people at one time. It also helps to build your credibility and reputation.

Conduct professional training classes. This allows you to reach other healthcare professionals. It also helps to build your credibility and reputation.

Passive Income Options
Now, that we've explored some of the alternative ways to generate active income, how about ways to generate passive income? Why is passive income so important? Think about it: What happens if you get sick? Or, what if you want to go on a vacation? Or, what if you want to retire, or you find yourself unable to work any longer.  Where is the income going to come from?

Some health coaches plan for these situations by working extra hours to acquire extra income to have available for the future, and for sick days or for going on a vacation. But, there is a better way to earn extra income instead of working more hours! It's called passive income.

Passive income is attractive because it frees you up to go on vacation or have enough of a financial cushion just in case you get sick.

And, if you desire to retire, or find yourself unable to work any longer, your income will cease to exist unless you have some form of passive income. In the past, this was accomplished by employee participation in company-sponsored pension plans.

Here are several ways to generate passive income that you can tie into your health coaching business.

Write an Ebook. Write and sell ebooks and other information products. Info-entrepreneurs make up a new class of entrepreneurs, creating and marketing information products.

Get Published. Write and publish your own book. Market it online to increase sales volumes and your royalties.

Write Online Articles. A lot of sites such as Demand Studios will actually pay you to write various articles online. Some offer up front type payments for the work, but a majority of the sites offer revenue sharing. This means that depending on how many views your article may receive, you would get a percentage of the profit. Here's where the nice part comes in though. If you do get any acclaim with the article views, then the profit you receive is generally each month- forever. As long as the article continues to get views you're getting paid!

Write for revenue sharing content sites, such as eHow, Xomba, HubPages, Suite101, Squidoo, Associated Content and Helium. Choose 2-3 sites to concentrate on and build up a large collection of articles on your chosen sites.

Develop a CD or DVD. Record your lectures and speeches. Then, create a CD or DVD to sell. This is especially great for people who don't like to write but love to talk.

Set up an Affiliate Blog. Build an affiliate blog, promote the blog, and use it to promote affiliate offers. This is by far one of the best ways to generate a source of passive income online.

Start with an affiliate site like ClickBank or Commission Junction. Find a few offers in a category that you know a bit about. Make sure they have good numbers, and do your keyword research to make sure there’s demand. After figuring out what keywords to optimize your blog for, start a new blog and write articles. SEO optimize the blog, and promote it around the web. Once the traffic numbers start going up, deploy some ads for affiliate offers. People click on the ads, and you get paid! Now repeat the process until you have ten or twenty blogs, or maybe hundreds if you want to make some serious cash online.

If you have a great product, then, recruit affiliates to sell your product. If you don't have your own product, but, you like someone else's product, then, you can obtain sales referrals fees by recruiting affiliates to purchase that product. Promote their product through your site, newsletter, email and social networking.

Perform Online Blogging. Some bloggers earn six-figure incomes from one niche blog. Once the blog is established, you will earn residual income from older posts as well as new ones.

Use Affiliate Sites. Many different companies have allowed the public to become affiliate marketers of their products for which they will gladly pay. Amazon is one such site as well as ClickBank. These sites allow you to choose from their vast array of products and services, and then allow you to advertise for them. In return, they give you a percentage of the sale profit. If done correctly and with much thought behind it, this can be a very lucrative business. The amount you may get per sale or per click will all just depend on the product or service you choose to market for the company. Some of the services on ClickBank boast up to $35 per customer that signs up!

Offer a Membership Site. Have a service you think is valuable? Think people might pay a monthly fee to have it? Then you might consider offering a monthly membership site for that service. You can always begin a small website, if you don't already have one, and then just add a shopping cart feature to it. With a little fine tuning and a stellar membership idea, eventually, customers will be clambering to become members of your service. You can even set the shopping cart up to bill people each time their membership expires automatically. This is where the real money will start to roll in, and better yet, with no work on your part.

Sell Your Photos Online. There are many sites such as Istock, that will gladly pay you if someone likes a stock photo you've taken. Once someone decides they'd like to use your photo, Istock will pay you a nominal fee each time they or anyone else uses it. If you have more than a handful of photos that are highly desirable, all you'd need to do is upload them to the site and then your work is all done. Then, you'd simply sit back and enjoy the proceeds that follow.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)/Network Marketing.  Find a product that you believe in and sell it to your family, friends, co-workers, etc.; and, convince them to also sell the product. The problem with this approach is that it’s very close to a pyramid scheme. In essence, you make money from signing up people who sell the product. Do your research first and make sure that it is a product line you are familiar with and passionate about selling. Otherwise you will be wasting your time and you'll end up pissing off your family and friends.

Website Ads. Add well-placed ads to your website or blog from places like Google and Media.net If a visitor to your site clicks on the ad and buys something, you get paid! But, it takes a while to build this up because you have to have a lot of people coming to your site.

Sell Advertising Online. In order to make money while you sleep, your site has to be self-sustaining and self-maintaining, which isn’t the easiest thing to do, because it requires a lot of traffic.With enough traffic the advertising revenue becomes passive income.

If you're successful, you will begin making money while you sleep and the hard work will finally pay off. Within the first few weeks you may be earning around $5 – $10 dollars a day. That may not seem like much, but, within a couple months, you may be pulling in $50 - $100 a day. Again, that may not seem like much, but a $100 a day translates into $36,500 a year! If your income continues to grow, who knows, you might reach 6 figures!

Warning: This is not easy -- this is hard work. Don't expect a minimum of effort to generate any significant passive income on a consistent basis. You won't get something for nothing.
