How to Become a Health Coach

Health coaching helps to reverse Type 2 diabetes
Health coaching has become a general term for a variety of similar job titles, i.e. health coaching, wellness coaching, health and wellness coaching, life coaching, diabetes health coaching, and executive coaching.

If you like to help people improve their health, health coaching can be a very rewarding profession for you. So, if you would like to become a health coach, there are many different types of online certification programs available to meet your particular needs.  Many schools and institutes offer online courses and some require in-person participation.  Some schools also offer a combination of online and in-person training.

There is great disparity between programs from 6 weeks of training to 2 years of training.  With such a wide range of training, you need to do your homework to ensure you get the right level of training to meet your needs. Don't assume that just because a well-established school charges several thousand dollars that the program is going to help you grow your business and make a lot of money!

Qualifications for Becoming a Health Coach
The qualifications for becoming a health coach vary by the organization or individual that will hire you. For example, if you hope to get a job as a health coach for an insurance company, you'll likely need a healthcare background and a successful track record as a health coach from previous experience.

If you plan to go into business as a health coach for yourself, you may not need any particular background except a knowledge of the health problems people are trying to avoid, and how to educate and motivate them to avoid those problems.

There are dozens of "health coaching institutes" and courses online, some of which may offer an excellent education, and others promising you can charge hundreds of dollars per hour for your health coach services without ever leaving your home. Be sure to review all potential courses you might take carefully.
Key Point: If possible, try to find a healthcare professional who has taken a certification training program and now has a viable successful business. This person will be able to give you the insight into such a program and the advantages and disadvantages associated with the program.

Where To Get Your Training
Which school or company you choose to obtain your training depends greatly on your preferences.

Ask yourself the following questions:
Is it important to you to have an exclusively online training experience?  Or are you okay with some level of in-class time? What about travel? Would you be able and willing to travel to other cities if it meant the schooling was more in line with what you were seeking? What are the legal requirements for health coaches in your state? Does the training school provide legal certification for your state?

What about tuition?  How much can you afford right now? Is it crucial that you choose a program that allows for payment plans over time?  What is your area of focus? Are you interested in the integrative medicine model, or perhaps you already have a background in the health care field? Or are you more interested in the nutritional aspects of coaching? Are you interested in a specific disease such as diabetes or heart disease?

You can see that the answers you provide to questions like this help to narrow down your search.

You can find a school that is ideal for your goals and your current situation.  If you want to become a health coach, browse the training schools and programs listed in this blog and on the Internet. Choosing a training program is the most important step for you to make. Once enrolled, within just a few short months you could be well on your way to a new career.
