What is Health Coaching

Health coaching (aka Wellness coaching or Health & Wellness coaching) is a method of guiding and empowering clients to gain the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence so that they can become active participants in making the necessary lifestyle and behavioral changes to improve their health and quality of life.

Health coaching offers personalized support and motivational tools to help each client develop a behavior plan that addresses the client's needs and lifestyle changes.

Like traditional coaching, health coaches utilize goal setting, analysis techniques, identification of obstacles, research, and use of personal support systems. These health specialists educate people on proper nutrition, like what and when to eat, as well as how to exercise and what types they should doing. This advocacy goes beyond fitness and nutrition, also involving behavioral modifications in the areas of sleep, stress management, drinking and smoking.

Health coaches can work with those who have medical issues, such as heart disease or diabetes, helping them after their diagnosis to changing their lifestyles to help save their lives by preventing further complications. They can also work with otherwise healthy people that want to become more healthy to feel better about themselves and prevent disease. Furthermore, it’s possible to specialize in areas such as smoking cessation, holistic health, diabetes, obesity, stress relieving strategies or working with patients suffering from chronic illness.

The relationship between the coach and client (coachee) is an accountability partnership focused on the overall health goals as defined by the client and the health coach (along with the client's healthcare team). 

This type of collaboration and teamwork is critical, especially if you're dealing with a complex disease such as Type 2 diabetes, or if the patient has a set of multiple diseases and illnesses that requires a lot of analysis and research.

Health coaching is a collaborative and personalized program that focuses on improving the health and wellness of the patient. Health coaching builds an individual’s capacity to achieve short-term and long-term health and fitness goals. Participants in a health coaching program interact one-on-one with their health coach in person, by telephone, Skype, email and online.

Unlike personal training or counseling, you, the client, are the expert when working with a health coach -- especially if you're diabetic. Why? Because, as a diabetic, you have more information than anybody else when it comes to your blood glucose readings, hemoglobin a1c, other blood test readings, your meal plan, your exercise regimen, your lifestyle, your challenges, and your concerns.

Whether a patient is working toward general wellness or a more specific health-related issue (i.e. diabetes reversal, blood glucose control, less medications, no medications), a health coach will focus on enhancing your quality of life and improving your overall health.

Most health coaches guide, motivate, provide customized resources, and help clients to set achievable goals. In general, health coaches do not diagnose, prescribe, or give advice – but, because of the growing needs of diabetics and others who want more specific direction, the role of the health coach (especially the diabetes health coach) has continued to grow and expand beyond the traditional responsibilities.

The role of a health coach (especially a diabetes health coach) is unique. A health coach will not just ask you if you have eaten the right foods for the day unless that is what you want your health coach to do. Instead, the health coach is there to help you identify and achieve whatever goals you set for improved vitality by coordinating the many resources available to you.

As a result, a (good) health coach will get involved in other areas that will help the patient achieve optimum wellness. These areas may include nutrition, eating habits, exercise, daily life, work life, detox, supplementation, emotional support, doctor appointments, and inner spirit, just to name a few.

Health coaches are high-level, seasoned professionals, experienced in communications, behavioral change, and in serving sedentary, high-risk and high-stress populations. Many health coaches hold degrees in Nutritional Science, Exercise Science, Engineering Science, Health Education, Exercise Physiology, Counseling and Health Education, and Counseling and Education; and, some may have a bachelor’s of science degree, business degree, master's degree, or, even a PhD.

Health coaches can work for themselves (running their own business), or they can be hired by healthcare facilities (hospitals, private practices, etc.) or even business corporations. As seen with the rise of corporate wellness programs, companies want healthier employees to increase productivity and lessen health insurance claims which explains why health coaches are becoming more and more employed or consulted in this work setting.

FYI: Health coaching can be performed in many ways, i.e. over the phone, in person, in a group, via the Internet, etc.This is important to understand, because it will allow you to reach more people.

  2. If you are sick and needs an health care professional to take care of you then hire a health coach. He will guide you through the health problems you are suffering from. That way, you may not take any step which is not good for your health because health coach will always look after your actions and your eating habits.
